Friday, February 21, 2025 - The family of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson, Wafula Chebukati, has broken its silence following his passing on Thursday night, stating that the cause of death has yet to be determined.
Speaking to the media outside Lee Funeral Home, family
spokesperson Eric Nyongesa Wafula revealed that a family meeting will be held
on Friday evening to discuss key matters, including the possibility of
conducting a postmortem.
He added that they have not yet spoken with doctors but plan
to do so soon.
"Last night, we lost the former IEBC chairman.
“He passed away in hospital.
“All that the family is requesting is privacy during this
difficult time.
“We will issue a formal communication after our family
meeting," Wafula stated.
Chebukati, 63, was a lawyer by profession and gained national
prominence during his six-year tenure as IEBC chair, overseeing two
highly-contested presidential elections under Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta and
William Ruto.
Following his death, national leaders, including President
Ruto, paid tribute to him.
"I have received the news of the passing of former IEBC
Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with profound sorrow.
“He was a principled and diligent leader who served the
nation with integrity," Ruto said.
