Friday, February 21, 2025 - Renowned NTV journalist, James Smart, has shared his last conversation with former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati, moments after news of his passing emerged.
Chebukati, 63, died on Thursday evening after a long
illness, his family confirmed.
Reflecting on their final interaction, Smart revealed that
during Chebukati’s last public event before his retirement on January 23rd,
2023, he had asked him whether he would write a book about his experiences as
IEBC chair.
His response was cryptic yet telling: "Some
things that happen in our country cannot be said."
Chebukati served as IEBC chair from January 2017 to January
2023, presiding over two of Kenya’s most contentious elections.
The 2017 presidential election was nullified by the Supreme
Court, leading to a rerun that opposition leader Raila Odinga boycotted.
The 2022 election also sparked controversy, with four IEBC
commissioners disowning the results, though the Supreme Court upheld the
outcome.
