Friday, March 21, 2025 - Former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has admitted to playing a role in the removal of ex-governor, Kawira Mwangaza, asserting that the move had nothing to do with gender but rather her leadership failures.
Speaking to NTV, Murungi dismissed Mwangaza’s claims that
male leaders conspired against her simply because she is a woman.
Instead, Kiraitu argued that her conflicts with Members of
County Assemblies (MCAs), MPs, and other leaders made it impossible for her to
govern effectively.
“She was always in a brawl with MCAs, MPs, and even us, the
former leadership.”
“She mishandled and embarrassed us,” Murungi stated.
Murungi, who lost his re-election bid to Mwangaza, claimed
he was willing to let her lead but was forced to act due to her arrogance and
failure to foster development.
According to him, Mwangaza’s leadership shortcomings
convinced leaders that Meru County would stagnate under her administration.
"Even if she were given 10 years, the county would
remain in disarray," he added.
Despite her claims of gender bias, Murungi insisted that he
has always supported women in leadership and was initially hopeful about
Mwangaza’s tenure.
However, her performance fell short of expectations.
Mwangaza officially lost her seat on March 14th after
the High Court upheld her impeachment by the Senate.
Justice Bahati Mwamuye ruled that the impeachment process
followed due procedure.
Meanwhile, Kiraitu is confident that Isaac Mutuma, sworn in
as Governor on Monday, will foster
unity, and promote development in Meru.
