Friday, February 14, 2025 - Renowned Kenyan lawyer and orator, Prof. PLO Lumumba, has unleashed a scathing critique of ODM leader, Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.
Speaking on a popular podcast, Lumumba dismissed Raila’s
candidacy as a strategic move to exit local politics and pave the way for
President William Ruto to inherit his support base ahead of the 2027 elections.
The former Kenya School of Law Director questioned why Raila,
who is nearing 80, is so desperate for the AUC job instead of enjoying his
retirement.
He also took issue with the extravagant nature of Raila’s
campaign, which has seen him crisscross over 27 African countries in private
jets - funded by Kenyan taxpayers.
With the AUC elections set for February 15th and
16th in Ethiopia, Raila faces stiff competition from Djibouti’s
Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato.
The winner must secure at least 33 votes from the 55 AU
member states through a secret ballot.
Lumumba’s remarks add fuel to the already heated debate on
Raila’s continental ambitions, raising questions about the true motive behind
his candidacy.

So many factors work against Raila Odinga-age, reputation etc-but Kenya imagines the world has forgotten who Raila Odinga truly is, just for this election. pic.twitter.com/ejpWGSwXaA
