Monday, February 17, 2025 - Djibouti has swiftly rejected President William Ruto’s assertion that Africa “lost an opportunity” following Raila Odinga’s defeat in the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson election.
Djibouti’s Ambassador Moussa Mohamed Omar emphasized that
the 33 heads of state who backed Mahmoud Ali Youssouf did so based on merit,
not Kenya’s domestic politics.
Reacting to Odinga’s loss, Ruto openly expressed his
disappointment, stating, “Raila Amolo Odinga did not win, yet he was the best
candidate.
“Africa missed an opportunity to be served by one of its
finest.”
His remarks, made during a Saturday dinner, signaled
frustration over what he saw as a missed leadership moment for the continent.
Djibouti’s Youssouf secured a decisive victory, garnering 33
votes - meeting the two - thirds threshold needed to clinch the seat.
His win cements Djibouti’s influence in continental politics
as he takes over from Chad’s Moussa Faki, who held the position for eight
years.
Meanwhile, Raila Odinga has said President William Ruto was
not to blame for his loss, saying the President did “everything possible” to
support his campaign for the continental role.
“There will be a lot of blame games: I did not do much as
expected; I am tired and too old; Ruto was not genuine in supporting me.
“Ruto did everything possible for this campaign.
“He gave me all the logistical support I needed and made my
appointments to meet all leaders on the continent,” Odinga said.
