Princess ANNE's no-nonsense response during her engagement interview

Thursday, October 22, 2026 - Princess Anne once gave a remarkably direct response during an engagement interview that continues to attract attention from royal fans. In 1973, ahead of her marriage to Captain Mark Phillips, the then-22-year-old princess was asked whether she would make a good housewife, including questions about her ability to cook and sew.

Rather than offer a carefully polished royal answer, Anne responded with characteristic confidence, saying, “Well, that’s hardly up to me to say.” Her straightforward reply offered an early glimpse of the independent personality that would become one of her defining public traits.

The questions continued as the interviewer asked whether she could prepare breakfast for her future husband. Anne replied that she could manage it, adding that when Phillips was competing in equestrian events, he would not get much more than a cup of coffee.

Asked whether she could sew or put on a button, she delivered another memorable line: “Yes, I’m not totally useless. I was quite well educated, one way or another.” Her response demonstrated her dry humour and refusal to be boxed into traditional expectations without questioning them.

More than five decades later, the interview remains a talking point because it reveals a side of the Princess Royal that royal watchers continue to recognise: practical, outspoken and rarely interested in unnecessary fuss.

Anne has built a reputation through decades of public service, combining a demanding schedule of royal engagements with her own interests in equestrian sport and charitable work. For today's audiences, her candid answers are a reminder that confidence and authenticity can leave a stronger impression than carefully rehearsed words.
