Tuesday, August 11, 2026 - Former Donegal All-Ireland winner James McHugh has been named as the 62-year-old man who died following a road collision in County Cavan.
The crash happened shortly before 2pm on Monday on the N3 at Drummallaght, between Virginia and Cavan town, when the car McHugh was driving collided with a van. His wife, Noreen, who was travelling with him, was seriously injured and airlifted to Beaumont Hospital, while the van driver suffered minor injuries.
McHugh was a key member of Donegal's historic 1992 All-Ireland-winning team and earned an All-Star award that same year. The Kilcar native made 59 senior inter-county appearances for Donegal and also won two Ulster titles during his career.
His contribution to Donegal football has prompted an outpouring of tributes, with colleagues and supporters remembering him as a respected figure both on the field and within his community.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Donegal's GAA community, with attention now turning to McHugh's family and his injured wife.
