Tuesday, March 11, 2025 - The Kenya Kwanza Government has officially disclosed that it spent KSh 523.85 million on former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s unsuccessful campaign for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.
New details presented before the
National Assembly confirm that the funds were allocated to support Raila’s bid.
Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign
Relations Committee chairman, Nelson Koech, stated that the National Treasury
approved the expenditure under Article 223 of the Constitution, which permits
withdrawals before parliamentary approval.
Appearing before the Liaison Committee
- chaired by Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss Shollei - Koech defended the spending,
stating, "The committee approves the expenditure of KSh 523.84 million
for the State Department for Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Affairs,
incurred under Article 223."
The revelation comes amid controversy
over claims that the Government allocated KSh 13 billion for Raila’s campaign.
Juja MP, George Koimburi, a close ally
of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, made the allegations.
However, Raila dismissed Koimburi’s
claims upon his return to Kenya.
Speaking alongside President William
Ruto at State House, Mombasa, he termed the allegations as baseless and accused
critics of inflating figures to tarnish his image.
The expenditure has ignited debate over
Government spending priorities.
