Friday, February 7, 2025 - Tension remains high in the South-Ngariama Ranching Scheme, Mwea-East Sub-County, Kirinyaga County, as enraged residents continue to flush out suspected members of the outlawed Mungiki sect.
On Thursday, a 50-year-old man suspected to be part of the
gang was killed, and his house, along with all his belongings, was set ablaze
at Itangi Trading Centre.
According to residents, the victim had been selling tomatoes
and onions at the market, while his first wife lived at Kadawa Trading Centre.
“We knew he was part of the outlawed sect, but he tried to
play hide and seek with us,” said one of the residents after the house was set
on fire.
Mwea-East Sub-County Police Commander Mohammed Jarso
confirmed the incident, condemning the residents for taking the law into their
own hands.
“Moses Njagi was killed by angry residents. Unfortunately,
the man is no more. Let us respect lives,” said Jarso.
The residents launched a crackdown against sect members on
January 29th, 2025, accusing them of forcefully taking land and
assaulting women.
So far, three suspected sect members have been killed.
Over 500 residents are now keeping watch, while elders guard
women and children at home.
However, Mwea-East Deputy County Commissioner Fred Ayieko,
has urged residents to respect the law and allow authorities to handle security
matters.
