Friday, February 2, 2024 – The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal’s Moses Mabhida region on Thursday dismissed claims that several of the region’s high-profile members have defected to the newly-formed uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, led by former President Jacob Zuma.
The
region used to be Zuma’s support base, with several of the current ANC regional
executive committee (REC) members at one stage being regarded as part of the
former president’s inner circle.
Perceptions
that several influential ANC members in the region were collaborating with the
MK party gained traction two weeks ago.
This
was when thousands of ANC supporters from the region converged at the
Pietermaritzburg YCMA for an MK party event addressed by Zuma.
However,
ANC Moses Mabhida regional secretary Siminenkosi “Samora” Ndlovu said none of
the ruling party’s REC members were collaborating with the MK party.
“It’s
all lies. The entire REC is currently working hard to ensure victory for the
ANC in the upcoming elections,” Ndlovu explained.
If
there were any of the REC members working with the so-called MK party, I would
have known by now.
“It’s
impossible for an REC member to mobilise for a rival political party, even in
secret. What we have in the region is just one or two former ANC councillors
who are working with the MK party.
“As
far as we are concerned, those individuals no longer have any influence within
the ANC in the region. By joining a rival political party, they have ceased to
be ANC members.”
Zuma,
despite the ANC’s position that the MK party was “fake”, insists that the new
party forms part of the ANC.
He
has in recent weeks been criss-crossing the province as part of the MK party’s
elections campaign.
According
to the former president, the MK party’s main objective is to “rescue” the ANC
from the ruling party’s current top brass, led by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The
ANC’s top leadership, which on Monday announced that it has since resolved to
suspend Zuma from the party, has warned that ruling party members who aligned
themselves with the MK party will be expelled.
“The
ANC PEC [provincial executive committee] has resolved that action be taken
against all members who are public representatives and members who are
participating in the activities of other political parties,” ANC provincial
secretary Bheki Mtolo said.
