Wednesday, January 31, 2024 – Former President Jacob Zuma, who was suspended by the ANC’s top leadership for aligning himself with a rival political party, is unlikely to fight his suspension.
According to KwaZulu-Natal ANC members who remain close to
Zuma, the former ANC leader viewed his suspension as “inconsequential”.
“He has already said he doesn’t recognise the ANC NEC
[national executive committee] led by Ramaphosa. The reason he aligned himself
with the MK party is because he wants Ramaphosa and his friends to be removed
from their positions, both in the ANC and in government,” a Zuma supporter in
the ANC Moses Mabhida region said.
Another ANC member in the region said Zuma had expected the
ANC leadership to “act in an irrational manner”.
Since they were elected in 2017, they have been working
against the ANC. Their objective is to weaken the ANC.
“That’s what uNxamalala [Zuma] has been telling ANC members
all along. So, he is not surprised at all about the decision to suspend him,”
the ANC member said.
The ANC NEC on Monday announced that it had resolved to
suspend Zuma’s ANC membership.
The ANC top brass’ decision came six weeks after Zuma’s
announcement that he would campaign and vote for a newly-formed organisation —
the MK party.
However, despite aligning himself with a rival political
party, Zuma insisted that he remained an ANC member. MK party spokesperson
Nhlamulo Ndlela said the party’s stance was that Zuma remained “an active
member of the ANC”.
However, Ramaphosa described Zuma as a “free agent”.
As we speak now, Jacob Zuma has been suspended by the ANC
because he said he is going to support this party, which many of us believe he
has formed, and on top of that, he said he wants to remain a member of the ANC.
“The ANC constitution does not allow that, and that is why
the NEC has taken the decision that it has taken,” Ramaphosa said.
